Stranger Than Fiction Films - Deeper

The latest project by Jennifer Peedom follows a team of cave divers as they explore New Zealand’s Pearse Resurgence cave system, thought to be the deepest dived cave in the world. The team is led by Richard Harries, one of the heroes of the 2018 Thailand cave rescue.

We partnered with production house Stranger Than Fiction Films to create the titles, maps, graphic effects and animated explainers to sit over the top of the documentary footage. We were tasked with communicating technical concepts simply, and spent dedicated time in pre production designing a visual library to be used throughout. Transposing scientific material into formats that would be easily digestible by audiences and visually understood quickly was a fun challenge.

For instance high-pressure neurological syndrome, which can be a fatal side effect when the body is submerged to extreme depths, and the Hydrogen Expedition the team embarks on to test a workaround to this condition. We animated charts to quantify the risks associated with different levels of submersion which was displayed over the top of actual footage of the divers as they descended, conveying the drama of what they were putting their bodies through.
