BBC - Bluey Tunes

I was commissioned to knit a collection of Bluey puppets for a series of stop motion music videos for the BBC. My puppets sang and danced along to well known and beloved songs from the show: Fruit Bat, Keepy Uppy and Taxi.

These dropped weekly on the Bluey YouTube channel and live on Apple TV+ and ABC iview for audiences of all ages to stream.

Being based in Melbourne at the time and working with a production house and armature model maker in the UK, meant components were shipped to me.

The armatures were 3D printed in resin with steel, nuts and bolts used to create arms and legs that could be articulated and posed securely in animation. The first step was to pad these with soft foam, before designing and knitting skins around them.

Translating 2D characters into 3D knitted models posed a fun challenge, and my development focused on how to make these iconic designs my own while staying true to the originals.

I made duplicates as the shoot took place over two stages, so it was important I wrote out the knitting patterns I designed and followed them closely, ensuring the Bluey and Bingo doubles were identical.

This was such a charming project to be involved with and I hope I did this sweet family of Australian dogs justice!
